Ever wonder why we use hardwood for heating homes?
Hardwood and softwood are two primary categories of wood used in construction, furniture making, and various other applications. The distinction between them is not based on their actual hardness, as commonly believed, but rather on their botanical origin. Hardwoods come from deciduous trees, which lose their leaves annually, such as oak, maple, and mahogany. Softwoods, on the other hand, are derived from coniferous trees like pine, cedar, and fir, which typically remain evergreen year-round.
In addition to strength and aesthetics, hardwoods are also superior to softwoods when it comes to heating homes. Due to their higher density, hardwoods burn more slowly and at a higher temperature, producing more heat over a longer period. This makes them a more efficient and effective fuel source for wood-burning stoves and fireplaces. In Vermont, common hardwood species include sugar maple, red maple, beech, yellow birch, and white ash. These locally harvested hardwoods not only provide excellent heat but also support the state’s sustainable forestry practices, making them a popular and environmentally friendly choice for Vermont households.
At Wood4Good, we want to provide the highest quality wood for our neighbors in need. Just this past weekend, we had numerous volunteer groups working at the wood lot preparing hardwood for home delivery and our wood packs. Vermont State Troopers and other community members braved the cold and snow so that we can keep our good work going.

If you are interested in helping us heat homes, we have many opportunities for outreach, grant writing and fundraising. We invite you to reach out to see how you can get involved! Please tell your friends and family about our services; we are always looking to help more families.
